Brandwag Primary School History

Brandwag Primary School was initially established in 1920 as Tempe Public School, later the school’s name was changed to the Robert Bowie School and after this it was also known Generaal C.R de Wet School. The school was situated inside Tempe Military base. It was known as an English only school, but in 1929 Afrikaans was added as a medium of instruction. The school was renamed as Brandwag Primêre Skool on 31 Augustus 1970 and at this stage was an Afrikaans only school. The building of the current buildings were started in 1975 and formally opened on 20 October 1978.

The school’s numbers declined to only 145 learners in 2006. On 1 January 2007 the school returned to parallel medium status to cater for both English and Afrikaans learners. Currently the enrollment to the school is over 1 500 learners.

In 2013 extensive changes were made to the infrastructure of the school including the office block, tuck shop, new staff room and 7 additional class rooms as well as several other improvements.

Leadership at the school has consisted of four principals at the current facility including Mr JC Hertzog, Mr C. Strydom, Mr D. Meyer and currently Mr A. Venter.
